My deepest sympathy to Kathy & family. Didn't know Gene that long or very well, but my impression was one of a friendly
"gentle giant" with a caring soul. Unfortunately I know his journey was a difficult one, but may you take come comfort
in knowing he is now at peace. My thoughts & prayers are with all of you.

Uncle Gene was a loving and kind man. I remember visiting in Buffalo, and going to Basketball games at the school, how strong he was... able to pick up myself in one arm, and my sister in the other. Condolences to my Aunt Kathy, and cousins Matt and Maureen.. we love you..

I hope that this message and the many others like it help your family through the difficult adjustment to a life without Gene. Please be comforted by the fact that Gene touched so many lives in a wonderful caring way. To me, he was a coach, mentor, and friend. Gene was always good for a kind word, a quick smile, and some constructive advice. I offer you my deepest sympathies and hope that you all are comforted in these times by so many excellent memories of a truly superb man. Greg MacKay

Gene was the absolute definition of neighbor , friend and citizen. He was always ready with a smile and helping hand. I cherished each Mother’s Day poem and Christmas centerpiece created by this dear man. I’ll fondly remember each interaction. One of my favorites was this neighbor among the first to greet my family, informing me that I would be hosting a portion of the neighborhood traveling Christmas party. I’m so glad I did. The world is truly a better place for having had him in it and I am certainly a better person for having known him.

I met Gene through my dear friend, Barry Soffin. They were pals and it was quickly evident. Barry never suffered fools so I got a quick sense of the mettle of this man and that quick sense turned into the reality of one who not only was a superb teacher but a gentleman who placed family first, was quick to laugh and held a deep sense of loyalty to those whom he loved. In the intervening years since Barry's passing, Bob Drajem would keep me apprised of Gene's struggle with Lewy Body and of his courageous attitude throughout. I cannot help but think that the good Lord needed another mathematician and he has taken our finest. May you be at peace, my friend and may the beauty that you have woven through former students, friends and family be the beacon that continues to shine its celestial lights on the generations you have touched.
Jim Duggan
