One of the reasons I decided to major in Exercise Science was because it offered a biomechanics class...I always loved math, and my goal was to go to medical school, so I was really excited about taking Dr. White's class. The first day of lab, I showed up after having gone out drinking with friends, having forgotten my backpack, with literally not even a pencil on me. Dr. White gave me this look, like he knew exactly what a silly college kid had been up to the night before. I ended up having a conversation with him anyways about how excited I was to be taking his class, and told him about my pipe dream goal of one day being an orthopedic surgeon. It probably sounded nuts coming from someone who showed up to his class without even something to write with, but the next week when I got to lab he had laid out textbooks concerning biomechanics in orthopedic surgery at the table I was sitting at. He ended up writing one of my letters of recommendation for medical school. I'm in my second year now, and just presented some of the research I worked on this summer, in orthopedics, at a conference of orthopedic residents and surgeons in Boston. It made me want to email him. I still think about him from time to time. He was one of the best professors I've ever had, and an awesome human being.

Scott was a wonderful teacher and a great gentleman. I remembered saying goodbye when I retired. Now a second goodbye. May peace be with Holly and family members.

I am so grateful to have been one of Scott's students at UB. Scott was on my dissertation committee and I was one of his teaching assistants for his laboratory sections in biomechanics. Scott understood my passion for baseball, where I coached for the varsity team as I studied. Scott really understood my motivation to incorporate my education into coaching athletes. I was definitely unconventional as a doctorate student and he was always so supportive. I will never forget my dissertation defense. I actually cried at the end of it as I was moved by my committee's support and family being with me. During the roundtable discussion to follow the defense, Scott said, "Great work Ryan, but remember, there's no crying in baseball." It was classic and so was he. My prayers go to his family and I will never forget him. Ryan Crotin - PhD Graduate 2013

I am so sorry to hear of Scott's death. We were fellow PhD students at Waterloo and met many times at International Society of Biomechanics meetings all over the world. Scott was a wonderful, authentic, kind man and steadfast colleague and friend. We will miss him. My sincere condolences to the family.

So very sorry to read this about Dr. White. He was so full of knowledge, a great resource for myself when a student, and a great professor to be a TA for. He will be smiling down among all his loved ones.
